Good candidates for a hair transplant

A good candidate for a hair transplant procedure is someone who has experienced mild to moderate balding or thinning of their hair. You will not be a good candidate, however, if you have a very widespread pattern of balding across your head. This is because there will not be enough hair to transplant from one area of the head to another. Other reasons you may not be a good candidate for a transplant is if you are susceptible to thick keloid scars or if your hair loss is due to chemotherapy.

Hair transplant procedure

For a micrograft only 1-2 hairs will be taken per graft. For a slit graft, 4-10 hairs will be taken from one site. This is predetermined by you and your plastic surgeon and depends on how much coverage is wanted for the result. The procedure will also depend on whether the follicular unit transplantation or a follicular unit extraction technique is used. The former involves the plastic surgeon cutting a strip incision along the back of the head and removing this portion of the scalp to be placed in the desired area. The latter involves using a needle or a blade to make very small holes and individual hairs are placed in these holes and left to grow. In this instance, the surgeon may be required to transplant hundreds of individual hairs.
Usually, this is an outpatient procedure and you are awake for the duration. A numbing agent or local anaesthetic is applied to the scalp to mitigate the pain. Afterwards, the area will be wrapped in gauze or bandages to help with the healing for a few days.

Hair transplant post-procedure recovery

It may take a few sessions with a plastic surgeon to graft enough hair to cover the intended area. This can take a few months as the new hair follicles need to heal each time. Hair growth is usually only evident 8-12 months after the surgery. This is because once healed, the hair begins to fall out and makes way for new hairs to grow. You will have to take a few days of rest after the procedure and may be prescribed pain medication, alongside antibiotic and anti-inflammitory medication. This will help with any soreness or swelling you may encounter.
